Well, There is That!

Long Strange Trip

In the parlance of the late, great, Jerry Garcia, what a long strange trip it’s been!

When I set out to write my first novel, Exit Strategy, in 2016, I had just two prevailing thoughts… the first, make sure it’s something you want to read (because as I later discovered – I would read that #@$&% manuscript in all of its shapes and forms more than one hundred times).

The second was – this shouldn’t take long. Of course, I had absolutely no clue as to what I was doing. No clue how mind-boggling difficult it would be, no understanding of the process. So, as a result, it took four years before presenting my manuscript to both literary agents and prospective publishers. Yes, it was a long time. To be fair, I also managed to open a hotel or two and take over the sales and marketing for another hotel during the same period, so there is that!

I also had no idea how insular the publishing industry is, in that bringing my book to market required no less than four hundred submittals, of which one in thirty even bothered to respond. Of those that do, the answer was, of course, no!

Until I finally got my YES!

You see, for years, I had been writing professionally, mostly proposals for companies seeking new contracts or business opportunities in response to other companies’ requests for proposals (RFP).  These RFPs were sent by organizations looking to acquire specialized expertise. Most request documents exceed one hundred pages, so our response was usually double the volume of the RFP.  In some cases, our voluminous responses were a careful blend of fact and fiction, tied together with whatever creative writing you could add, demonstrating your company was indeed the perfect partner. During the creation of these dry, usually extensive efforts, I was led to believe I have some talent, and while that remains to be seen, I have published the first in a trilogy of books I hope you will find enjoyable.

Exit Strategy, told in the third person, is a tale of vengeance, greed, murder, and mayhem with surprising plot twists, which I am confident you will find the perfect read on your next vacation or business trip.  As a bonus, I have included the first chapter of the second in the series, Next Wave!

This blog is the first of my periodic musings, written in support of Exit Strategy and this new endeavor.  I will post others as I work to release Next Wave.  If you would like, you can catch me on Twitter – @meyer952!
